Methacrylate: properties and uses
Dividing screens, storage boxes, displays, showcases, vases, engraved panels, skylights... Methacrylate is a multi-purpose material with a wide variety of uses, which can be found in many different sectors.

But... Why is the use of this material so widespread? This is explained in the following post.

Methacrylate is a thermoplastic polymer with a glass-like appearance due to its transparency and rigidity. However, the qualities of methacrylate make it a more resistant material, and it is currently used as a substitute for glass. Specifically, methacrylate is 10 to 15 times more resistant. This thermoplastic material can be used both indoors and outdoors, thanks to its resistance to impacts and weather conditions, so it has a warranty that can be extended for up to 10 years.

The main difference between glass and methacrylate is that the latter material is much lighter, allowing it to be handled more easily. This is why the use of methacrylate has become so widespread, especially during the pandemic. It is a lightweight material, which is easy to handle, and also has thermal and acoustic insulating qualities, and has been used as anti-contagion protection.

Another important feature of this thermoplastic is its flexibility. Although it is a very rigid material, it is easy to work with, and can be sanded, cut or moulded using heat. This allows customised parts to be created.

Finally, it is worth mentioning one of the main advantages over other materials: its maintenance. Methacrylate is a material which is 90% transparent, so it can get dirty easily, but it is relatively simple to clean and can be returned to its original state using just a cloth with soap and water. It is also true that this material can be easily scratched, but it can be repaired as often as necessary with a polishing paste, which leaves it in impeccable condition.

At Induplast, as specialists in plastic machining, we can advise you on your project and manufacture the methacrylate pieces according to your requirements.

We can also tell you that, due to stock clearance in our warehouses, we have an offer on transparent PMMA/PLEXIGLASS® methacrylate sheet, at a cost price of €21/m2 + VAT
